Why 50 Pieces Is the Right First Order for a New Label

Most new labels end up choosing between two bad options: order a few hundred pieces and sit on the stock, or ask for twenty and get a unit price that makes the product impossible to sell. The middle ground — 50 pieces per style per colour — exists for a specific reason. It is the smallest quantity at which a production partner will run your order as a real production run, and the largest quantity a new label can commit to without gambling.

What a first order is actually for

Testing a design in real channels starts with a first order you can afford.

Testing a design in real channels starts with a first order you can afford.

A first order is not a revenue event. It is a test. It answers three questions that no amount of research can answer for you: does the fit work on a real body, does the fabric behave the way the swatch promised, and will anyone actually buy it at full price. Fifty pieces answers all three at a cost you can absorb.

The four things you can test at 50 pieces

Fit, fabric and the size curve all get tested on real garments before bulk.

Fit, fabric and the size curve all get tested on real garments before bulk.

  • Fit across your size range. Fifty pieces spread over five sizes gives you ten units per size — enough to review on a fit model and enough to see which sizes sell first.

  • Sell-through at full price. A real retail test in one or two channels, without discounting, tells you more than any amount of forecasting.

  • A reorder signal with numbers behind it. Sell 40 of 50 at full price in three weeks and you have a defensible reason to place 200. Sell 10 and you learned it for the price of fifty units.

  • How your production partner actually performs. Delivery timing, quality, and whether they tell you about problems or wait for you to find them. You want to learn this on 50 pieces, not on 500.

Where 50 pieces genuinely costs more

Unit price at 50 is not unit price at 500, and it should not be. Pattern, sampling, print setup and minimum fabric purchase are one-off costs. Spread across fifty units they are heavy; across a thousand they almost disappear. Any supplier who quotes you the same unit price at both quantities is either losing money on one of them or has not costed the order properly.

The useful comparison is not unit price. It is the total cost of being wrong. Fifty pieces that do not sell is a manageable loss. Five hundred pieces that do not sell can end a young label.

When 50 is the wrong number

  • If the product needs a printing plate, a custom knit or a special dye lot, the minimum comes from the process, not from your supplier.

  • If you have already sold through a sample and hold 300 pre-orders, order 300. Small batch production is a tool, not a religion.

  • If the fabric itself carries a high minimum, it is often better to design around a fabric you can actually buy in small quantity.

What to prepare before you ask for a quote

  • A tech pack, or a reference sample we can measure

  • Your size chart, or a clear instruction to build one

  • Fabric direction: weight, composition, hand feel, or a swatch

  • Label, hangtag and packaging requirements

  • Your target delivery window

The precision of the brief determines the number of sampling rounds. A clear brief usually means one round.

Timeline and terms

  • Confirmed sample: 15–20 days

  • Bulk production: about 60 days after deposit and sample approval

  • Payment: flexible terms, agreed per order

Questions we are asked most

What is your minimum order quantity?

50 pieces per style per colour for new brands, designers and trial orders. 500 pieces per style for standard bulk programs.

Can I order 50 pieces in a single colour?

Yes. The minimum applies per style, per colour.

Can I split sizes within the 50?

Yes, subject to a sensible size curve. Mixed sizes are normal for a first order.

Do you work from a photo?

We can start from a photo, but we will ask for a reference sample or measurements before cutting anything. Photos do not carry fit information.

Ready to test a design? Send us your tech pack, reference sample or artwork and we will come back with a costed proposal, including the sample stage.
